i just went in june and my mom and sister took me…we decided ALL hotels were really expensive…even the nasty ones! so what we did is we went to and we looked at apartments people rent out to tourists..and we rented one two blocks down from the empire state building and it was so much fun! it was a funky little apartment…and we stayed for four days and ended up paying way less than we would have for a hotel. i would go with renting an apartment…way cheaper. and it actually felt like you were in new york living…rather than visiting..it was so much fun! you get the feel for new york more if you stay in a rented apartment. check it out for real!

You got a few options to reduce the costs. First, there’s the Sunday Stays program which the City runs, with most of the major hotels in NYC participating. Basically, you get Sunday free. Details here -
Second, you can specify your budget, and get a list of hotels based on that.
Lastly, you might want to look on it in another way. Find out which hotels are offering free breakfast (a lot of them do), or better still, get a good Bed & Breakfast which offers use of a kitchen, and free breakfast. If you can cut down the cost of food by even 40% or so, you’ll be saving a heck of a lot.
FYI, any hotel offering rooms below $150 is going to be a dump, except for a couple of places, which offer cheap and decent accomodation, like the Pod hotel and Travel Inn.
