Yuck! first off, it depends on which hotel your staying at b/c if your having problems with that, you should talk to the hotel manager to give you a cleaner room with no ants. Lots of ants in a hotel room means management is not keeping up with Pest Control on a normal basis. You don’t want to be paying a lot for what they call “roach motel”.
I expect that hotel owners have no choice but to use extermination contractors with powerful toxic chemicals.
My wife and I live in Taiwan, where ants and cockroaches are unavoidable no matter how clean you keep the joint. It just goes with the climate. We are on the same latitude, or less, as Taiwan, so your circumstances are similar.
1. Don’t freak if you see a little lizard in your room. Be thankful if you see a gecko. I love them just as much as they love ants and cockroaches.
Don’t leave food out–and that includes garbage. If we miss garbage pickup, we can’t just leave the garbage until the next day. There are very few public trash bins but very little litter in Taiwan. I know where the trash bins are, and I’ll jump of my motorbike and get rid of the grabage that way. It’s against the law, you don’t get life in prison if caught. Sometimes we even seal the garbage in a plastic bag and keep it in the fridge until we can get rid of it. Keep food things that do not need to be refrigerated in airtight sealed containers.
Make sure you mop up spills right away.
Use toxic things sparingly, but sometimes you have to.
Welcome to the tropics! You are getting to know some of our lesser appreciated wildlife.[g]
I have no idea how many kinds of ants there are here, but that range in size from tiny to pretty big, and from black to reddish brown.
There are ant traps at Longs, grocery stores and the like. They work by attracting ants to the bait. They eat the bait and return the the nest to kill the colony.
The best thing you can do in a hotel room is what we do in our homes, especially kitchens. Keep things dry. Don’t leave any water spills, even from brushing your teeth or and pouring a glass of water. The ants are attracted to the water. If there is water sitting around, they will come. So get rid of the water. Keep things dry — bathroom sink area especially.
Of course you should also report your problem to housekeeping if it is severe.

Let the hotel staff know what’s going on, it’s their responsibility unless you brought tons of sugar and scattered it around the room…
