I’m going to downtown Houston for work in January. What hotels should I stay in?
Hotel Dealsmutigers97 asked:
My meetings are in the Allen Center, but the hotels near there (Doubletree and Hyatt) are both pretty pricey ($250+ per night). I was looking at the Alden, Magnolia, Lancaster, or Club Quarters. Are those in decent areas and is there anything to do around there? I’d like to stay outside of downtown and just drive in, but i think parking in that area is a mess (and expensive).

I normally use and pick the locale that I want to stay in…..MOST of downtown Houston is NOT a nice place to be……….park your car and take the bus….or walk to work.

The Alden and the Lancaster are VERY nice. And both the restaurants in the hotels as very very good.
If you like the theater these hotels will put you right next to all of Houston’s theaters(Alley, opera, symphony, etc)!
And there is a movie theater (the angelica), Hardrock Cafe, bars, and there might be special events going on around that time.
If you stay in the Lancaster try their Salmon… it’s amazing!
Also if you do like the theater buy your tickets in advance and those hotels will offer you a pretty big discount (for some of the arts companies)!
BTW the man above is very wrong downtown Houston is very nice… I’m there almost everyday of my life (haha) and the traffic is rarely bad in the area, you can take a taxi for $6 anywhere in downtown… but those two hotels have a town car that will take you where ever you need to go. It is a nice area, of course some parts are not but the part you will be in is very nice and very safe!

The magnolia is gorgeous, as is the Alden. You can get a good rate for both on hotels.com. There is plenty to do around the downtown area as the way of bars, lounges, and places to eat. The Hilton is going to be too $$, although it is really nice. Good Luck!

if you’re meeting at allen center, you should just go ahead and stay downtown. you can take the tunnel system to get to your meetings without dealing with parking or traffic.
i got married at the magnolia, so i am definitely partial. i can tell you that all my friends and family who travelled in were thrilled with their rooms and the hotel in general.
the alden is nice. the restaurant goes up and down (it’s changed chefs many times) so i am not sure what phase it is in right now. the rooms there are nice but it’s more on the fringes of the north side of downtown and has a couple shady businesses around. the magnolia is more central.
lancaster is gorgeous. it’s more traditional where the other two are more modern.
i don’t know what the rates are this time of year, but you might also consider Hotel Icon. it’s gorgeous and their restaurant and bar are consistently good.
there is a lot to do downtown, but mostly on the weekend. if you stay close to the light rail you can get to the museum district easily. there is a great exhibit at the museum of natural science right now
also, there is the continetal club for live music and julia’s bistro for food on the rail line.
here is the best site in houston for dining out
also, the chronicle has weekly calendars of happenings around town
