Not looking for expensive, but good value for a nice place. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Also, we will be travelling in April 2007, what is the weather like there?

This site has loads of information on the island itself.
This site has lots of deals on hotels
Having been at the Westin and comparing the price to other hotels, I’d say that’s your best deal.

we paid 269 a night at the sheraton grand lucaya. it was april 2006. we flew a private plane, although it’s supposed to be severe clear with 72 degree water, we had to stay an extra night due to strong thunder storms. all 3 weeks in the bahamas in april we dealt with rain. we stayed at a hotel across the street form shearton for 70 dollars a night that evening. it was far from fancy. but it had a fridge, oven, separate living room, and a large patio with a bar-b-que. it’s been owned by a canadian couple for 35 years now who are in there sixties. great people, pride of ownership. The grounds and beaches of large hotels are fancy, interiors are not impressive. Beaches nearby are clean and 72 degrees, but no sea life or reefs. Port lucaya marketplace is much cheaper than resort food and decent quality. Buy a sim chip for your cell phone from bahatel and be sure it’s proper bandwith, payphones are a hassel. If you insist on larger chain hotels the westin(sister property of sheraton) is more asthetically pleasing. good luck.

Try the Westin/Sheraton on Lucaya Beach–they have packages that include airfare and depending on how you feel about an ocean view the prices are good. The hotel is nice, has several pools and lots of restaurants. Parts of the hotel were just renovated in the past year. If you want to get more details about the hotel and check out some of the other options: Viva Wyndham, Pelican Bay, go to the Bahamas Tourism Ministry web site (www.bahamas.com), select Grand Bahama from the Islands list at the top of the page and then “Where to Stay”.
In April the weather is nice and not too humid. Highs are in the low 80s and nights are in the 70s (www.bahamasvacationguide.com/weather.html#average)
Have a good time.
