Find one that charges by the hour. I hear those establishments are cozy.

It depends on what you mean by cheap…
If you just want a bed and a clean room and don’t care much about amenities, then I recommend sticking with a recognized motel chain. One of my favorites was always LaQuinta (Motor Inns). Many of them have a pool, but if you want cheap. look for the ones that do not. Another chain with a good reputation is Red Roof Inns. BE SURE to check the diamond rating in some sort of directory or look online. Some of the most reputable hotels can turn bad within a year. I would, personally, never stay at a motel with less than a 3 diamond rating, but that is up to your personal cleanliness preferences. Occasionally you run across a motel with even a 4 diamond rating, but the service could be so terrible that the diamond rating doesn’t matter.
If you take the time to do about an hour a day’s reasearch, a month ahead of time, you’re sure to be satisfied with your choice.
One online hotel service (was it hotels.com??) I heard, allows you to bid on a room, and if they accept the rate you offered, you’re in!
I have found that if you call the hotel DIRECT (long-distance but could save you twice the amount of the phone call) you can get special rates, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR THEM. Ask what the least expensive room they have, costs, and whether they offer any discounts. There are military discounts, there are travel industry discounts (sometimes less than half price)& there are AAA discounts (these can be sometimes lower then what is in the AAA Tour Book* if you call direct) to name a few, and more. JUST ASK. DON’T BE TIMID. They want your business. If you say you were hoping to find a room under so-many-dollars, if business is slow, they just might give it to you for that!
One last thing..if you are staying in a ritzy or tourist area, look for time-shares. You can take the hour long tour, listen to the meeting about benefits and costs, and get to stay in a suite with a hot tub,(for example) for less than you would pay for a standard motel room.
(I did that in Orlando and now I will never stay in a resort area any orther way!)
Good Luck to you!
